My name is Esmé and I'm a third year German & Linguistics student at the University of Oxford who is passionate about providing students with a bespoke and encouraging learning environment, whether they want to improve their grades, prepare for an exam or work through a tricky subject area. I take a student-centred approach, with my main aim being to boost the student's interest in their subject. I believe this is what fosters the best results and is ultimately the most beneficial for the student! Therefore I adapt my lessons to what the student finds suits them best, finding new and creative ways to support and inspire them. At Oxford I regularly analysed and discussed both literary and scientific texts and presented complex topics to my peers. I am therefore well-equipped to help students develop their critical thinking skills necessary for effectively analysing their English or German set texts. My decision to study Linguistics at university was a result of how much I loved doing topics such as Child Language and Historical Linguistics in English Language A-level, a subject in which I got exclusively As and A*s for graded work. During my year abroad, I consolidated my german language skills and can confidently offer tutoring in all areas including german grammar, writing and conversation. Hi! I'm Stella, and I just graduated with a Master's degree from Queen's College, University of Oxford. At GCSE, I achieved all grades A/A*/8/9, including 9s in English Literature, English Language, and History, and an 8 in Mathematics. At A-Level, I achieved grades A*/A*/A in English Literature, Government and Politics, and Art and Design, which led me to receive an unconditional offer to study at the University of Birmingham. I graduated from Birmingham with a First-Class Honours BA in American and Canadian Studies, which involved writing First-Class essays on literature, history, politics, and art history. I was also the sole recipient of the Brian Harding Prize for excellence in my field. At Oxford, I was awarded the George Oakes Scholarship for American Studies on the merit of my application and undergraduate writing samples, meaning that my studies were funded. During my Master’s, I completed Distinction-graded essays in literature, poetry, and philosophy, achieving a high Merit overall. Outside of academia, I have worked in gallery and museum outreach, through which I have years of experience patiently and enthusiastically teaching young people about the humanities and supporting them to feel knowledgeable and confident.
