Hello, I'm Isla! I recently graduated from Durham University with a first-class degree in Biological Sciences. During my second and third years at university, I formally tutored students at various levels up to A-Levels. I greatly enjoy teaching and have been doing informal tutoring throughout my educational journey from GCSEs. I am keen to help students understand, engage with, and enjoy the content they are learning! I tutored Biology A-Level during my university years. My teaching style focuses on question-and-answer methods, with exam and study questions helping further enhance the student's knowledge of the subject, which helped me achieve 8/9s in GSCE science subjects and an A* in A-Level Biology. However, I will alter lessons to complement the student's needs. I explore anything the students don't understand until they feel confident about the material, using visual aids to reinforce any particular areas of difficulty. I also like to bring in extra material related to the everyday world they see and the information they are learning about. I will always work to improve their confidence in themselves and their skills. Furthermore, I have developed acute skills in writing scientific essays, literature reviews, and designing an ecology project. Therefore, I can provide feedback and offer any aid to those who want to improve in any of these areas. During my work experience and while volunteering for a SHINE project, I worked with younger kids (KS2) to provide English lessons. I immensely enjoyed teaching this subject and am enthusiastic about English. I obtained an English Literature scholarship for my A-level education, achieved an A* for English Literature A-level, and am spending my current year after my university degree working on a novel. I would love to help any student find a passion for creative writing or analysis of literature, which allows them to prepare before they go into KS3 or GCSEs. In my free time, I work on a fiction novel, sew, or hike in the wilderness. I am interested in mycology, spending lots of time looking for and identifying various fruiting fungi, and zoology, enjoying any time spent with animals! I’ve always believed that the best investment one can make is in learning, especially when it’s done with patience, clarity, and care. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol, earning my MEng (Integrated Master’s), but I’ve found some of my most meaningful work happens not in labs or lecture halls, but one-on-one with a student and a problem to solve. As a tutor, I’ve helped students from age 6 to 20 grow more confident in mathematics, from foundational skills all the way to A-Level, IB, and university preparation.
