Hi, I'm Hugh, a University College Dublin graduate in Mathematics and English (96% GPA in Mathematics), currently studying for an MSc in Actuarial Science at Queen's University Belfast. I've tutored for five years, more than 800 hours across 80+ students, and I currently work with British GCSE and A-Level students online. In my own Leaving Certificate I got six H1s, placing in the 99th percentile nationally, including Irish 95%, French 97% and Spanish 99%. I've spoken Irish since birth and spent a year living and working in Spain and France, and I only started French in my final year of school, so I know how to learn a language fast. I teach Maths, Irish, French and Spanish, and I'm proudest of the big jumps my students have made. An A-Level student averaging a D/E was struggling across at least six topics, but the real gap was manipulating algebraic expressions. We rebuilt that skill first, and he reached an A within three months. An A-Level student, also on a C/B average, reached an A in three months once we fixed how he spotted when to use integration by substitution and how he structured hypothesis tests. My lessons start with a challenging question we'll build towards together. Rather than asking "do you understand?", I ask students to explain the idea back to me as if they were the teacher, which shows quickly what has really sunk in. I look for the root cause of a student's struggles rather than just going over old material, and I've delivered target grade improvements for every student I've taught.
