“Edumentors is the first platform I’ve tutored on which really considers and values the time and skills of its tutors. It gives me the freedom to set my own timings and prices and doesn’t seek to take advantage of its student tutors by taking an unreasonable percentage of the fee. The organisation is run with a personal and empathetic ethos which makes it a real joy to work for.” – says Imogen.

What Do You Need to Start Online Tutoring Jobs?

First of all, you’ll need a laptop or PC where you’ll be doing tutoring sessions. If your laptop lags frequently and it’s impossible to have a smooth learning experience, parents might not want to work with you anymore. Even several minutes are precious for both you and your tutee.

Then you need to know what subjects you’ll be good teaching at. Seems self-explanatory, but you may feel like you know history well, but understand that knowing the subject may have nothing to do with teaching it. If you can’t explain topics in simplistic ways, don’t risk it.

In addition, depending on what grades you’ll be teaching, teaching methods will vary. For example, you may need much more enthusiasm and energy to teach early years and your deep understanding of maths’ hardest topics may not help with it! So make sure you know what you are capable of before applying.

Now, Where Do You Start?

You can share your offers on different platforms, like Reddit, Craigslist, and even Facebook or Instagram. Find suitable and relatable communities, specify your qualifications, and write down the price, (if you won’t, it’s most likely parents won’t even consider you). It’s not mandatory, but you can write a small paragraph about yourself – why you choose to be a tutor, what makes you a good tutor and how can you specifically help children learn. You can also show communities reviews from other parents.

If you choose to apply to online tutoring services, you will have the interview process which will be slightly different from others. At the end of the day, they are just a mediator to help parents and tutors find each other. Therefore, they won’t be assessing your skills as other jobs do. You’ll have to prove your skills to the parents! That does not mean they won’t be checking your credentials so be as ready as you can.
