The Digital Classroom: How to Combat Eye Strain and Maintain Wellbeing

George

With traditional face-to-face classes increasingly giving way to virtual learning, more students are
embracing the digital classroom as a convenient and flexible way to pursue their studies.

As we highlighted in a previous article, the UK has seen a surge of over 50% in online course enrolments over the past few years. Online learning offers undeniable benefits, such as tailored learning paths that allow students to learn at their own pace, interactive features like gamification that make education more engaging, and global networking that connects learners from different cultural backgrounds. However, with the shift to digital learning comes a set of challenges, particularly for eye health.

With screen time on the rise, digital eye strain (DES) has become a common issue among online learners. A study in the Clinical Ophthalmology journal found that 68.53% of the 750 students surveyed experienced DES, with mild DES affecting 43.20% and severe symptoms present in about 11% of students. Common symptoms included headaches, dryness, and a burning sensation in the eyes. The study also found a link between DES severity and certain factors, such as using smartphones for online classes and not using eye lubricants.

Given these risks, it’s essential for online learners to adopt proactive strategies to safeguard theireye health. Here are key eye care tips to help virtual learners maintain ocular health and overall wellbeing.

Update glasses prescriptions

The Higher Education Policy Institute reports that a sixth of 12-to-13-year-olds and over a quarter of 15-to-16-year-olds now have myopia. Wearing glasses with the correct prescription not only ensures academic success by improving visual clarity but also helps to reduce eye strain. Fortunately, top eyewear retailers now boast services to ensure that prescription glasses can be updated and ordered online. Ray-Ban, for one, has a wide range of frames compatible with single-vision lenses and customisable options. This includes blue light filtering lenses, which studies suggest can mitigate eye strain and help regulate sleep-wake cycles.

Take frequent screen breaks

A study in the Nepalese Journal of Ophthalmology explored screen-induced eye strain and found that 90% of participants reported DES symptoms after two hours of uninterrupted screen use. These symptoms, however, decreased significantly with frequent breaks. Health experts, such as Dr. Karan Rajan, recommend the 20-20-20 rule for those who spend prolonged periods in front of screens. This means that every 20 minutes, you should look at something at least 20 feet (around six metres) away for at least 20 seconds. To help develop this habit, consider setting a timer on your phone to remind you to take these screen breaks, as even small, regular breaks can provide relief from DES symptoms.

Keep lubricating eye drops handy

One of the main contributors to DES is dryness, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. This condition occurs when the eyes don’t produce enough tears or when tears evaporate too quickly, resulting in inflammation and discomfort. According to the Clinical Ophthalmology study cited earlier, not using eye lubricants was associated with more severe DES symptoms. To prevent dry eyes, it’s recommended to use lubricating eye drops. Drops containing HP-Guar, a polymer that closely mimics natural tears, can offer prolonged relief from dryness. For instance, Systane ULTRA Preservative-Free eye drops provide effective hydration and can be a practical addition to an online learner’s toolkit.

By updating glasses prescriptions, taking regular screen breaks, and using lubricating eye drops, online learners can enjoy a healthier and more comfortable digital experience.

Conclusion

Online learning has revolutionised education by offering flexibility, personalised learning paths, and global connectivity. However, the challenges, such as digital eye strain, highlight the importance of balancing screen-based education with proactive health measures. Students must prioritise strategies like updating glasses prescriptions, taking regular screen breaks, and using lubricating eye drops to ensure a healthier and more comfortable learning journey.
