I am really passionate about teaching and this year I have engaged in a variety of teaching roles, including volunteering as an English teacher for 3 months in Nepal. I have tutored History and Geography A level, alongside English Lit and Language GCSE for over 3 years. My tutoring style primarily revolves around teaching technique based essay writing improvements, and my students are able to massively boost their academic performance by focusing on these core skills. Hi I'm Esme Rose Mathialahan, and I'm an undergraduate at the University of York studying English Literature. As Head Girl, I acquired experience working with students of a range of ages through leading study groups, assemblies and student council meetings. One example of my tutoring experience includes participating in a mentoring programme where I worked with GCSE English students (whilst studying for my A-Levels) in both group settings and one to one. Hi! I am a Masters graduate with a Distinction in Creative Writing, along with a First Class Honours degree in English Literature from Durham University. I also achieved A* in English Literature at A Level and A* in English Literature and English Language at GCSE. My lessons are generally structured around past questions from the relevant exam board. I will usually give students 5-10 minutes to read the extract and make initial notes relating to the question, before going through my own notes and how I would approach the question. This includes close analysis of key themes, literary devices and the writer's intentions, alongside a suggested essay structure which takes students through what to include paragraph by paragraph. I then give students the opportunity to begin writing a response to the question and am available to offer assistance as required. Students can then finish the question as homework and I will provide feedback in our next session - if requested, I can also provide live feedback paragraph by paragraph while you are writing. I'm currently working on the novel I wrote for my Master's degree and gathering research for my PhD next year. I'm extremely passionate about tutoring - my ambition is to become a university lecturer and published novelist.
