What is a factorial and why is it useful in mathematics?

A factorial is the product of an integer and all the integers below it. It's denoted with the symbol !. For example, 5! = 54321 = 120. Factorials are very useful in mathematics, particularly in the field of combinatorics, because they help us calculate the number of ways certain events can occur, such as the number of different ways to arrange items or the number of different outcomes in a lottery.
