Why is the concept of 'infinity' used in mathematics, and what does it mean?

Infinity is a concept used to describe something that is boundless or endless, or a value that's larger than any finite number. In mathematics, we often use infinity to represent an unbounded quantity. For example, the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, ... continues indefinitely – it goes on "to infinity". It's important to remember, though, that infinity is not a conventional number, but a type of quantity that transcends finite numbers.
